Grooved Pins
Materials

Standard Grooved Pins are manufactured from cold drawn low carbon steel. The approximate tensile strength is 110/125,000 psi, with a corresponding shear strength of 65/80,000 psi.

All pins are readily available with various surface finishes and can be case hardened for specific appli-
cations.

Where a higher shear strength is desirable, Grooved Pins can be manufactured in heat treatable alloys. In addition, stainless steel as well as other ferrous and non-ferrous materials can be furnished according to customer specifications.

Finish and Plating

Unless otherwise specified, standard low carbon steel pins are zinc plated to Mil spec. QQ-Z-325a type 1 class 3. Other finishes and plating are available to customer requirements.
Metric Sizes

All Grooved Pins are available in metric diameters and lengths.

Insertion and
Removal Forces

The forces required to install or remove a Grooved Pin vary according to the length, groove design and diameter of the pin.

Should it be necessary to obtain these figures for design purposes, contact our engineering department.

Engineering
Information

Table 1 below lists the more commonly used data where specific load require-
ments are known, or where the ap-
plication involves attaching machine parts to a shaft. The values for torque and horsepower transmitted are the maximum values with an included safety factor of 8.

This information is based on using standard C-1212 steel and heat treated alloy steel. To find the double shear values for other materials, multiply the double shear for cold drawn steel by the factor in Table 2 which corresponds to the particular material. These factors can also be used to calculate values for torque and horsepower transmitted.

The shaft diameters listed in Table 1 are the minimum diameters allowed for the corresponding pins manufactured from standard stock and under double shear. Increasing the pin diameter without increasing the shaft diameter can result in damaged or fractured shafts.

If more information is necessary, do not hesitate to contact our engineering department for consultation.
